What listeners say...

I have been in “church” for over sixty years and never realized Genesis was not fanciful tales told around the campfire as I was told. May God bless you for allowing me to access true teaching at last.

Are Mormons considered Christians?

- VBVM Staff - July 14, 2009

Is the Mormon faith another form of Christianity? They teach they are the only truth, but how is that different from what you claim? - E.F.

The Mormon religion is a man-made religion preaching a false gospel that cannot save. Though Mormons portray themselves as Christians, they are not. Even worse, they claim that they are the only true faith, and they claim that their view of "truth" is exclusive.

Any group claiming to own an exclusive truth is demonstrating cult-like tendencies (i.e., the desire to control the message and limit outside views). In this case, Mormons teach a false and distorted view of Christ and Christianity, while claiming it is the only true view and all other views are outside Christian orthodoxy and are false religions. In the tradition of cult thinking, they instill an "us against the world" mentality in their followers that meets its purpose in isolating members from the real truth.

In contrast, a true Christian church never claims to have exclusive ownership of the truth that defines our faith. We certain professing that there is such a thing as an exclusive truth concerning God and His plan for salvation as established in Christ, we do not claim an exclusive ownership of this truth. Rather, we acknowledge God's truth has been given to all men through His word.

To sum up the difference, the Mormons claim they have an exclusive truth, which they define and guard. No one outside their group has the truth. In contrast, genuine Christianity follows an exclusive truth provided in the Bible but open to any who would profess faith in Christ and follow His word. In other words, the truth isn't something a group of people can control and dispense to its followers. Truth is a person and His word, and it isn't under the control of any one group. Mormons created their "truth," while true Christians are united through a Truth that existed before the foundations of the world.

More importantly, the term "Christian" is one that had a definition prior to the arrival of Joseph Smith and the Mormons. A Christian is someone who believes what the Bible says about Who Jesus is and what His death meant for that person (and by extension, the person believes all the related doctrines taught in the Bible concerning Christ). Therefore, the Bible provides the objective standard for defining who is a Christian, and this truth is not the property of a single denomination nor group of people. Anyone who agrees with the teaching of the Bible (the true Bible; not the false, distorted version the Mormons created) can fairly claim the title Christian without regard for where they may congregate.

No single denomination or congregation may claim to be the sole believers in the faith given through God's word, for that faith does not respect human boundaries. Likewise, no one group of Christians can claim to be the exclusive holders of the truth that defines the Christian faith, since God Himself defined in through His word. Christians may choose to align themselves with certain denominations or fellowships (or remain independent), but regardless a genuine Christian congregation would never insist that they are the only group of Christians with the truth.

The Mormon religion is ultimately no different than any other man-made false religion, because it believes that our righteousness is the product of works. We can see the Enemy's 's hand written all over this organization. The original "teaching" of the church came from a conman in the early 1800s who claimed to have received the faith from an "angel of light." See 2Cor 11:14 for the obvious Biblical cross reference. Mormonism was delivered by Satan to corrupt the minds of unbelievers.

It's also helpful to note that Mormons do not display a cross in their churches. In fact, Jesus' death is not significant feature in the theology of the Mormons, because Satan works diligently to remove any understanding of atonement and grace. As a result, Mormons are taught that they must work their way to heaven rather than trusting in Jesus' work on the cross. It's the same hopelessness of trying to earn something that can't be earned by our own merit, which the Bible clearly teaches is impossible (Eph 2:8-9).

Men are not saved by works but by faith in Christ alone - and a Mormon can't earn God's favor anymore than Buddists or Hindus, or anyone else. Just just because they put the name of Jesus on the building doesn't change who they are.
